Math Quiz Pattern and Relations October 15

We will be having our first Math assessment of the year for the unit on Patterns and Relations on Thursday October 15. A practice test is being sent home, along with some work samples from the unit, and possibly some work that your child may not have been able to finish in the allotted amount of class time. This is not "homework" in the sense that it needs to be handed in, though students have been encouraged to complete it , to ensure that they have a full understanding of the concepts and time to ask questions around their comprehension before the test. Answer keys have been included for the work samples as well.

If the practice test didn't make it home this weekend and you would still like to practice, you can email me at slywkam@fsd38.ab.ca and I will send it to you.

October book orders have also been sent home and are due October 15.

Homophone and Vocabulary Quizzes have been sent home. If you have not yet signed and returned them please do soon as soon as possible.

Students need to bring in an empty shoe box or Kleenex box to make pinhole cameras for science next week.

On the Learning Path

We have gotten ourselves organized and have started getting into the good stuff...

Thank you for those of you who have signed up for the Remind 101 app!

If you haven't yet filled out and returned the green, salmon and pink coloured sheets, please do so as soon as possible.

Magazine sales are also under way. Please look in the take home folders for more information.

We are working on Habit 1 of the 7 Habits of Happy Kids, following Stephen Covey's "The Leader in Me" program.

We have had some important discussions around our responsibilities at school, home, to ourselves and to the environment.

In Math, we have been working on building number patterns, determining and creating the pattern rules.

Here are some websites with some practice problems:

Our current science unit is Light and Shadows. Students will be building Kaleidoscopes and experimenting with making shadows in the near future. Please have them bring in a flashlight and batteries and an empty paper towel roll. If you have any sequins, small shiny objects, colourful beads or objects of interest that we could add to our kaleidoscopes, please send those too!
We learned about the spectrum of the rainbow. Here are our ROY G. BIV characters:

In Language Arts, we have been spending time building our stamina for reading and writing by ourselves. We have also started a novel study together with the Newberry winning book " The Whipping Boy" By Sid Fleischman. We are focusing on different strategies for  reading comprehension such as making mental pictures, check for understanding and replacing new vocabulary words with other words that would make sense in their place.
